Hull Stingrays produced a much-improved performance as they went down 3-2 to Nottingham Panthers in a thrilling Elite League encounter in front of another bumper crowd at Hull Arena.
Player-coach Sylvain Cloutier demanded a response from his side after their disappointing 5-3 defeat at Newcastle Vipers and, in front of 1431 fans, Stingrays gave as good as they got only to be denied by Jade Galbraith’s powerplay marker which was the only score of the final period.
Stingrays took the lead on the powerplay in the 12th minute when British forward Matt Davies finished smartly for his second goal in as many nights but Panthers hit back to level with 39 seconds of the first period left with an excellent solo goal from Billy Ryan.
Ian McDonald tipped in a Corey Neilson shot to put Panthers ahead on the powerplay in the 26th minute but Stingrays restored parity with a powerplay marker of their own with in-form Jason Silverthorn unleashing a superb shot into the top corner at the halfway stage – his third strike in as many games.
Stingrays netminder Christian Boucher pulled off a stunning save to deny Dustin Sproat on a Panthers breakaway but the visitors went back in front with 13 minutes left through Galbraith’s bullet shot.
Despite pulling Boucher for an extra skater and having a two-man advantage for the final 67 seconds, Stingrays could not find an equaliser and force over-time.
Cloutier said: “You are always disappointed when you lose but I was looking for the guys to respond to the performance in Newcastle and they came out and played hard for 60 minutes.
“We had our chances and we have to take the positives out of the game. I tried to tell them that is how we have to play every night, we can’t afford to take a night off in this league whether you are playing Dundee or Coventry.
“Galbraith is their money guy and he got them their big goal. The skill level they have out there is top-notch. We tried to compete and out-work them and we know we have to out-work them to win, skill wise we know they will take advantage if we went end to end with them. We did a decent job.”
