Trafford Metros

Billingham Stars have a single game this weekend, as they cross the Pennines to visit the Trafford Metros tonight (face off 17:30).

The Stars and Trafford have done battle twice so far this season with both games going Billingham’s way.

Stars first encounter way back in October at the Metros Altrincham Ice dome saw the Stars grind out a 2 – 1 win in a feisty encounter . At the time of the last meeting there were only 2 points between the Stars and the Metros.

Since that meeting Trafford have slumped from second place in ENL One North to their current fifth placed slot, and the point difference has widened with Trafford now 13 points adrift of the league leaders.

However Billingham coach Stephen Foster admits he expects a tight game.

“We have seen it time after time, teams punch well above their position because they are playing the top of the league side, I expect a hard physical game at Trafford, that’s what we got in our first visit to their rink, and that is what we will get tonight”.

“Our confidence is high after putting 8 past Solihull; we will be travelling with a full 21 man squad and aim to keep that from running”

“We have received a fair amount of criticism over the past few weeks after some poor displays on our power plays, however we have worked hard, and we showed last weekend that we can make our power plays count. Six of our ten goals scored last weekend were on the power play that could prove useful against Trafford”.

“I believe that quite a few Billingham fans intend to travel over to Altrincham, I am sure that they will get behind the team and give them a boost, we saw at Whitley bay the huge difference vocal supporters make to the team’s performance”.

Trafford’s have fielded a fairly young team this season; however what they lack in experience, has been more than matched by their enthusiasm. With goals coming throughout the squad, their main scorers are Jake Nurse and James Roberson, ably supported by a more than capable keeper in the form of Paul Maudsley.

With Billingham now requiring 11 points from their remaining 8 games to guarantee a league title coach Stephen Foster will not be drawn into speculation.

“Early assumptions can readily turn into complacency; myself and Terry Ward are firmly of the opinion, that it is one game at a time, 100% effort, 100% concentration all the way to the end of the season”.

The Stars do not have a home game this weekend; however Stars fans may wish to turn their attention to the Whitley Warriors game tomorrow night, where their visitors are none other than the Trafford Metros.

Hopefully having suffered a defeat at the hands of the Stars tonight, the Metros will look to take out their frustration on second placed Whitley, and peg the Warriors back in their challenge for the league title.
