Billingham Stars went into their Christmas break on a festive derby game high with a 5 – 3 win at Whitley Warriors.

The first was a frantic paced period of nip and tuck, the Warriors were first out of the blocks as Callum Watson opened after seven minutes, a swift response from Stars Anthony Price saw the Stars pull level.

Whitley edged ahead under a minute later through Dean Holland, twenty seconds later Simon Hehir again pulled the visitors level.

With under three minutes to play in the first the Warriors pushed their nose forward, as Daniel Good lifted the biscuit home on the back hand.

Billingham’s third was a solo effort from Jamie Pattison who wrapped around to slot the puck under Whitley keeper Ritchie Lawson to close the first tied at 3 goals each.

A dead locked second session saw neither side able to take advantage and the second closed all level at three goals each.

The Stars went ahead for the first time in the game through Scott Ward who hit Billingham’s fourth a minute into the third. With under 10 minutes to play Stars’s Michael Elder netted the cushion goal assisted by skipper Paul Windridge and Cal Davis.

Warriors discipline started to slide as Billingham turned up the pressure with Shaun Kippen collecting two consecutive two minute sits for slashing, with a ten minute misconduct call for his response to the second call.

Both sides traded penalty’s as clock counted down, with another 2 + 10 for slashing against Warriors Rob Wilson and the Stars a bench minor for too many men.

A tired looking Whitley could not find a way back and the clock ticked down to the Stars second victory against the Warriors this season.

Billingham Coach Terry Ward was delighted with his side’s performance

“We stuck to plan, we were confident that we would have plenty left in the tank in the third”

“The way the goals were flowing in the first, I thought we were heading to a double figure game, but the second was as tight as it could have been”

Ward praised all his players for their commitment this season, and thanked the travelling Billingham fans for their great support at Whitley

“We have four great lines and some, it’s also the mix of experience and youth, five goals tonight from five different players that shows the depth we have”.

“We are in a great position heading into the second half of the season, we took control at Whitley, on and off the ice, it gives the players and the bench staff a huge lift when we come out to a welcome like that away from home”

Billingham go into the festive break 7 points clear of second placed Whitley and 14 points clear of joint second sides Blackburn and Trafford.

Player Stats – Scott Ward 1 + 1, Jamie Pattison 1 + 0, Simon Hehir 1 + 0, Michael Elder 1 + 0, Anthony Price 1 + 0, Paul Windridge 0 + 1, Callum Davis 0 + 1, Graham Robson 0 + 1
