Statement from Bob Phillips

Statement from Bob Phillips

For the past few months the Steelers organisation has worked tirelessly behind the scenes trying to improve our playing squad and thus our on ice product, we have been hampered by injuries and initial salary cap restrictions. As the owner of the Steelers I certainly take responsibility for our current plight and know I have some difficult decisions to make in the coming days and weeks.

We are certainly a club in crisis. When I took over this club 5 years ago we were in a similar position and we worked ourselves out of that situation, I certainly never expected to be back here again.

In the summer we played by the rules and to some extent that has hurt us this season, by that I mean that we followed the league rules on salary cap. As a league we all agreed that the penalties for breaking the cap were so harsh (point reduction, coaches banned from the league etc) that we had no option but to abide the boards decision for the benefit of the league and all member clubs. As we are now all aware, the salary cap isn't being enforced by the league so we have been left out on a limb. In saying that clubs like Hull, who beat us for the first time in their history in Sheffield last night, Edinburgh and Newcastle have all managed to inflict defeat on us playing to a salary cap considerably below ours.

I fully understand that injuries have played a major part in our season to date, however we are not the only club to have suffered and whilst key, senior members of the team have been missing we can't use injuries as our excuse. The simple reason that we are where we are is that we haven't been good enough, the league table doesn't lie in January. My eye's didn't lie in December when I returned home to watch some games and your eye's aren't lying when you see the team every week.

I don't want you to think that we haven't tried to rectify this problem because we have worked around the clock to do so. We have signed new players only for them to get injured hours before they jumped on a plane to come over here, we have agreed terms with some high end players only for more lucrative deals to be placed before them at the 11th hours. I think we all agree that the signing of Jonathan Zion who played so well this weekend and scored in both games has improved our team, as I write this the club are very close to signing another impact player who we are excited about and believe will not only improve our team but our entertainment value as well.

This morning I will hold a conference call with Mike O'Connor and David Matsos, that call will be a long and decision making one and it will continue until an answer has been found to this, the most embarrassing position the Sheffield Steelers have found themselves in their 18 year history. In many ways I would dearly love to share with you everything that is going on behind the scenes as we try and rectify this situation but as you can appreciate I can't.

You have my word that everything that can be done, will be done and I thank you for your time and patience, something that perhaps we don’t deserve right now.
