Excel Hull Stingrays claimed a point in the Rapid Solicitors Elite League following a 5-4 defeat after penalty shots against Fife Flyers in Kirkcaldy.

Just as they did during their 6-1 win in Fife on October 29, Stingrays found themselves behind inside two minutes, with Matt Siddall netting for the hosts.

Toms Hartmanis doubled Fife’s lead on the powerplay and Matt Cohen made in three with a short-handed effort in the 36th minute.

But Jereme Tendler, with his 11th of the season, pulled a goal back within 25 seconds on the powerplay and Derek Campbell grabbed another for Stingrays 100 seconds later.

Dmitry Rodin (powerplay) tied the game in the 47th minute and Kurtis Dulle, also with the man advantage, put Stingrays ahead for the first time.

However, Stingrays leaked late on once more as Siddall’s second forced overtime and after that failed to find a winner, Mike Hamilton was the only one successful in the shoot-out.

Player-coach Sylvain Cloutier, once again behind the bench, said: “We were lucky to get a point, to be honest.

“We got outworked and when you get outworked you don’t win hockey games.

“The guys did not show up in the first period and Fife took advantage, it gave them some life. Give them credit, they were the better team.

“We did great to come back but again gave up a late goal and in the shoot-out it can go either way.

“You have to play the same way for 60 minutes whoever you are playing. We didn’t do that but we are returning with a point and now we have to get ourselves ready for a big weekend.”

Stingrays are back in action when they travel to Edinburgh Capitals on Saturday before Fife visit Hull Arena on Sunday.

Stingrays take on Fife Flyers at Hull Arena in the Rapid Solicitors Elite League on Sunday November 20 (6pm face-off). Tickets can be purchased by ringing the Hull Arena Box Office on 01482 325252.
