Stingrays fend off Vipers

Excel Hull Stingrays survived a late scare to emerge victorious 3-2 against Newcastle Vipers at Hull Arena in the Elite League.

With goaltender Michel Robinson pulled for an extra skater in a bid to tie the game and force overtime, Vipers scrambled the puck home only for referee Andy Carson to rule it out as it had hit the face mask of Stingrays netminder Martins Raitums.

George Halkidis followed up his brace against Nottingham Panthers on Sunday by putting Stingrays into a fourth-minute lead and Konstantin Kalmikov – goal number 36 of the season - doubled their advantage eight minutes later.

Jason Tejchma pulled a goal back for Vipers on the powerplay with 43 seconds of the first period remaining but man-of-the-match Jason Silverthorn restored Stingrays’ two-goal cushion within 15 seconds of the restart.

Mike Berry grabbed another powerplay marker for Vipers with five minutes left to set up a tense finale with Stingrays seeing the game out after the visitors had that goal washed out.

Player-coach Sylvain Cloutier said: “We took a bad penalty late in the third which cost us a goal but other than that I thought we played one of our best games of the season the way we moved the puck and supported each other out there.

“It was a big game for us. We have four games left and we just want to get as many points as we can get and go from there. We are not worried about anyone else, we are just worried about ourselves and getting ready for the play-offs.”
