Hull Stingrays produced a fantastic third-period fightback to open their season with a 3-3 draw with Cardiff Devils in the Challenge Cup at Hull Arena.

With more than 1,000 fans turning out for the first game under the new management, Stingrays, who were out-shot 24-9 in the opening period, fell a goal behind in the 17th minute when Tylor Michel fired past the impressive Christian Boucher on a five-on-three powerplay.

Mattu Uusivirta, one of nine new signings, was unlucky not to level when he saw his shot hit the post before Devils doubled their advantage thanks to Phil Hill’s wraparound in the 28th minute.

Uusivirta made no mistake with his next opportunity as he produced a sublime finish on the powerplay to score Stingrays’ first goal of the season two minutes later. However, their joy was shortlived as Devils restored their two-goal cushion within 35 seconds.

Max Birbraer was given time to unleash a shot with the rebound falling to Jon Pelle and he continued his superb start to the season by beating Boucher. The Welsh side then had giant defenceman Justin Sawyer awarded a match penalty for a sucker punch on Stingrays defenceman Kriss Grundmanis.

Stingrays cut the deficit again with 12 minutes left as Ryan Lake, on his return to the team after four years out of the game, slotted past Stevie Lyle and 113 seconds later the home fans were on their feet again when player-coach Sylvain Cloutier poked the puck home after great work from Jereme Tendler.

The home side came close to winning the game in the latter stages and captain Kurtis Dulle hit the post with 16 seconds left but Cloutier was delighted with the result and performance.

He said: “We have been together for five days. I told the guys before the game just to make sure to play hard for 60 minutes and never give up no matter what the score is whether we are up by five goals or down by five goals. We have to keep playing the same way and not change anything. We need to get into good habits and I was proud of the guys for playing that way for 60 minutes.”
