Excel Hull Stingrays registered their biggest away victory of the season as they thrashed Newcastle Vipers 7-1 at Whitley Bay in the Elite League.

It was the perfect response to Thursday’s 9-0 thumping by Belfast Giants and halted an eight-game losing streak on the road.

Goals from Jason Silverthorn (2), Lee Mitchell and captain Jeff Glowa saw Stingrays lead 4-0 with just under half the game remaining. But unlike two weeks ago when they threw away a four-goal lead to lose 5-4 on penalty shots to Vipers, player-coach Sylvain Cloutier’s side did not make the same mistake again.

Stingrays goaltender Martins Raitums saw his hopes of his first shut-out for the club ended when Ryan Mahrle netted on the powerplay in the 56th minute but three goals in the last four minutes wrapped up an emphatic victory.

Konstantin Kalmikov’s 34th goal of the campaign restored Stingrays’ four-goal cushion before Cloutier and Lee Esders got in on the act as they won away from home for only the third time this season.

Cloutier said: “We all know we didn’t play well in Belfast, those games happen sometimes. But the guys responded, they came out flying, played hard and stuck to the game plan.

“We had a lot of guys chip in with points and we played as a team. If we play like that we give ourselves a chance to win hockey games. But we have to do it again tomorrow night against Nottingham. They still believe they can win the title and are a desperate team. We will need to play a perfect game again.”
