Hull Stingrays produced a positive response to their Cardiff Devils nightmare as they earned a 1-1 draw with Nottingham Panthers in the Challenge Cup at Hull Arena.
Stingrays suffered their heaviest league loss when they went down 12-0 in South Wales on Friday night.
But Stingrays, having already been eliminated from the competition, restored some pride against a Panthers side who went into the game with nine wins from 10 matches.
After a scoreless two periods, Stingrays took the lead 76 seconds into the third session when Konstantin Kalmikov netted on the powerplay – only his sixth goal of the season.
British youngster Matt Davies then earned a lot of credit after tussling with Panthers forward Jade Galbraith at the end of the period, with both earning five-minute fighting penalties.
But Panthers levelled with 10 minutes remaining as Rob Bellamy broke Christian Boucher’s shut-out.
Stingrays spent half of the third period killing penalties – including the final two minutes of the game – and were out-shot 20-5 but they held firm, with the result meaning Panthers have not yet qualified for the semi-finals.
Bench coach Bobby McEwan said: “We asked the players for a response after the shambles in Cardiff and they gave us one.
“In all my years in the game, I have never been as embarrassed as I was on Friday. We had a meeting with the players and told them a few home truths and the response was awesome.
“It was good to see Kalmi get a goal - it was a beauty too, the Kalmi of old. That will do his confidence a lot of good. He is here to score goals and he needed that one.
“The guys stuck to the game plan and they showed again what they can do when they do that. We just have to be more consistent.”
