Stingrays secure point
A third-period fightback helped Excel Hull Stingrays earn their fourth point in three games despite going down 5-4 after overtime to Edinburgh Capitals in the Elite League.
Lee Esders gave Stingrays, who played Adam Knight as a sixth defenceman with James Archer in the line-up, a first-period lead but four goals in as many minutes at the start of the second session turned the game in Edinburgh’s favour.
Owen Fussey, Michael Beynon, Mark Garside and Sean Perkins (short-handed) stunned Stingrays who replied shortly afterwards thanks to Konstantin Kalmikov’s 30th marker of the season.
Defenceman James Hutchinson’s first goal of the campaign and Esders’ second of the night on the powerplay hauled Stingrays level and forced overtime but Mark Smith netted just 42 seconds into the added session to give Capitals the extra point.
Player-coach Sylvain Cloutier said: “I will take a point given our fightback in the third period. It’s always tough going to Edinburgh because of the long trip and they are also strong at home.
“But that’s four points we have taken there this season and not a lot of teams will get more than that. The second period was disappointing but we battled back to get a point. Essie always works hard and had a really good game and deserved his goals and Hutch got a nice goal too – it’s about time he scored!
