Stingrays suffer Devils loss
Excel Hull Stingrays saw their three-game home winning streak in the Elite League come to an end after they went down 3-2 to Cardiff Devils.
Curtis Huppe (powerplay) opened the scoring for Stingrays but that was quickly cancelled out by Max Birbraer. Matt Miller and Ben Davies stretched Devils’ lead but Jason Silverthorn (powerplay) reduced the deficit. However, despite late pressure and pulling goaltender Martins Raitums for an extra skater, the home side couldn’t force a game-tying goal.
Player-coach Sylvain Cloutier, whose side face Devils again tomorrow in south Wales, said: “Discipline was the key word. You can blame the referee all you want but when you cross-check guys, you hook guys and slash guys, they are penalties. When you play short-handed for most of the game you burn yourself out. It was just a lack of discipline. It was very frustrating. Everyone was blaming the referee but you have to look at yourself in the mirror.
“It is going to be a battle tomorrow. They are great at home, they are big and strong and built for that building. They had two key guys out tonight [Brad Voth and Ryan Finnerty] and we didn’t take advantage of that.”
Stingrays are again likely to be without Adam Knight tomorrow with the Canadian still struggling with illness.
