Lee Mitchell marked his 200th Elite League appearance with the game-winning goal as Excel Hull Stingrays pulled off a stunning 2-1 victory over title-chasing Coventry Blaze at Hull Arena.

Luke Fulghum, the league’s leading goalscorer, continued his fine form against Stingrays by putting Blaze ahead on the powerplay in the 14th minute.

But Ukrainian forward Konstantin Kalmikov’s 31st goal of the season – and fifth in four games – tied things up before Mitchell’s breakaway effort put Stingrays ahead.

Coventry pulled netminder Peter Hirsch in the final minute of the game – and called a time-out – in a bid to force overtime but Stingrays held on to take their points haul to six in four matches.

It was also Stingrays’ first victory over Blaze this season at the eighth attempt and saw them cut the deficit to seventh-placed Newcastle Vipers to seven points – and with a game in hand.

Player-coach Sylvain Cloutier, who set up Mitchell for the winner, said: “I am really pleased for Mitch. When I found him all alone I was willing him to bury it. He made a nice move and it was a big goal for us.

“Mitch wants to win more than anyone. He really wants to be a part of this, he cares and he comes to work every night. He is a big part of our team and someone I can count on at all times.”

Cloutier added: “It was nice to finally beat Coventry. The guys played well for 60 minutes, we did not get too down when they got their goal, we kept plugging away and got a big win.”
