The hockey season is back, and you can follow it all with us right here on BIH.
We are working on an archive of matches, stats and players from BIH in the past few years.
There's one name that various Durham supporters have been clamouring to see added to the Wasps Legends team's line-up, and LIH are delighted to announce that Mario Belanger will be once again returning to the North East in May to do battle in the Warriors v Wasps Legends derby.
Mario arrived mid-way through the 1986/87 season, and departed early in the next, but what an impact the French-Canadian made on the Durham Wasps. Having never had any success on the hallowed Wembley ice, Durham arrived in the 1987 Heineken Championship finals as underdogs and having gone behind against Fife Flyers, another early exit looked set. That was until Belanger led a tremendous comeback with his fellow Wasps, Durham scoring three goals in 54 seconds (two from Belanger) which, along with his signature goal-celebration, is still etched in the memories of many to this day.
A natural goal-scorer, Mario quickly earned cult status among the Durham fans, and the news that he was to leave the Riverside Rink shortly before the 1988 Norwich Union Cup final stunned the Wearside faithful.
After a departure from British shores, Belanger returned in the 90s to be reunited with his Durham line-mate Kevin Conway at Basingstoke before signing for Nottingham Panthers in 1994.
We're delighted to bring Mario back for his second appearance as a Durham Wasps Legend and we're sure that Durham fans will be relishing the opportunity to see Belanger back on the ice in blue and gold
once again.
