Swindon Wildcats 3 - 2 Basingstoke Bison

Swindon Wildcats 3 - 2 Basingstoke Bison

Saturday night’s game saw the visit of Steve Moria and his Bison side to the Link Centre, in a game where both sides were looking to restart their winning streaks.

The game opened to a hard, physical start with checks being thrown and both teams striving for that initial first goal. It took a while for the deadlock to be broken however in the 8th minute Swindon found the net through D-man Jan Krajicek. The play saw new signing Rusic burst up the wing to find Krajicek sitting on the blue line, who hit a slapshot from the point to find the back of the net.

It only took a further two minutes for the Wildcats to double their lead thanks to a powerplay goal from Jozef Kohut. Goal scorer Jan Krajicek found forward Kohut leading him to drive the Bison defense back to their own blue line. Another shot was then hit from the point which again found its way past Basingstoke’s goalie Davey Lawrence. This bought the first period to an end with Swindon showing a much improved performance from the previous week and having a real advantage going into the next period.

The second period opened with the physicality of the first although the pace slowed and both teams were looking up to make the longer and more accurate pass. The first five minutes saw the Wildcats and the Bison both concede penalties, the Bison twice and then the in-form Jan Krajicek who was soon to be the forefront of a major talking point within the period. Moments after Krajicek saw his penalty end, he was caught in the face from the Bison’s Nicky Chinn’s stick who saw himself thrown from the game. The ‘Cats defensemen also headed to the locker room after suffering a cut lip and had to be seen to. From here the second period wound to an end and the Wildcats headed off 2-0 up and feeling positive to have held off last season Elite league side.

What was soon to be a very tense third period opened up much like the first and in just under the first five minutes Basingstoke found themselves in a five on three advantage. Swindon did well to defend the Bison attack until a controversial puck off the ‘Cats Goalie’s helmet was not called as a stoppage and left Basingstoke to grab a consequent powerplay goal by Ondrej Lauko.

This was the start to a very tense and tight period and both teams fought hard well into the third period for that game changing goal. The fans had to wait ten long minutes for the next goal whilst both teams traded penalties and it leaving Basingstoke on the powerplay at the half way point of the period.

Basingstoke took this opportunity to pass the puck consistently around the Swindon zone and swarm the net until an eventual tying goal came through previous scorer Ondrej Lauko for his and the Bison’s second.
With so much at stake neither team looked to concede any more penalties and the game’s pace increased to a very end to end style of play. Neither team could find the net again in the period and the game was taken into over time for third time this season at home.

Both teams went out to OT with very attacking lines and off the face off Swindon took the puck from their own D and brought it forward through Raimonds Danilics . He used his pace to get through the middle, around the Bison defensemen and swung a pass over to rising star Aaron Nell, who placed the puck under netminder Davey Lawrence for the goal that wrapped up the game for the win.

The team turned out one of their best performances this season and their ability to see off attacks and recycle plays demonstrated a developed team. The Wildcats will now look to build from this and hopefully take something away from the MK Lightning tomorrow night.
