The Swindon Wildcats opened their 2010/2011 season in emphatic style defeating Telford Tigers 5-3 on a nerve shredding night at the Link Centre. But it wasn't all plain sailing for the Wildcats who found themselves three nil down after the second period. But a brace apiece from Toivo Suursoo and Jozef Kohut and a Jamie Hayes goal completed a marvellous turnaround for Ryan Aldridge's team.

Swindon started the brighter of the two teams in the first period, having the majority of the play and the better chances. However, Tom Watkins's Telford were superb in defence and netminder Declan Ryan was excellant, keeping out shot after shot to frustrate Swindon players and fans alike. Swindon were soon punished for their lack of guile in front of goal, ex-Swindon forward Marek Hornak, who was in superb form all night, ran rings around Swindon's defence setting up Andrejs Maslovskis to place the puck past Chris Douglas on 02:39. The Wildcats had plenty of chances to draw level but Ryan kept out everything that went his way to send the Tigers 1-0 up into the second period.

The Wildcats started the second period very much the way they had started the first, pressuring the Tigers goal, but again Declan Ryan was in dominant form, determined not to let anything go past him. It finally looked as though the 'second period syndrome' had vanished but the Tigers had other ideas, striking twice in quick succession to leave the Cats with a mountain to climb in the third period. First, Andrejs Maslovskis notched his second of the night on 27:11 after some brilliant play by Marek Hornak who got his second assist. Hornak played a massive part in the third goal, teeing up Ashley Stanton on 30:52 to give Telford a massive advantage going into the third period.

There were plenty of glum faces around in the period break, but the Cat fans soon had something to cheer. Toivo Suursoo, who had been impressive in the first and second periods and unlucky not to score, grabbed his first league goal for Swindon on 47:17 which started the Wildcats remarkable comeback. Former Cardiff Devils forward, Steve Fisher, also notched his first league goal for Swindon, heaping the pressure on Telford who had started to fall to pieces. The Telford team were clearly shaken by this late resurgence and their defence was at sixes and sevens for the Cats remaining goals. First, Suursoo netted his second goal levelling the scores to send a buzz around the Link. Jozef Kohut, who looked impressive in pre-season, then netted two on 52:09 and 54:08 respectively to get Swindon up and coming in the new EPL season.

The Wildcats head to Bracknell tomorrow evening in what is sure to be another tense local derby.
