Former Coventry Blaze captain Ashley Tait netted a late game-winning goal to earn Sheffield Steelers a 3-2 victory at Sheffield Arena in the Elite League.

Blaze were again without captain Jonathan Weaver and Matt Soderstrom through injury and suspended forward Brad Cruikshank while Robert Farmer and Tom Murdy were on Great Britain Under-20 duty.

However, coach Paul Thompson, who was completing his two-match ban, was also minus the services of former American Hockey League veteran Sean Selmser (flu), although British youngster Aaron Nell returned from a one-match ban.

Blaze, again assisted by experienced defencemen duo Antti Kohvakka and James Pease, found themselves 2-0 down going into the final period after a goal in either session from Neil Clark handed Steelers control.

But Greg Chambers, with only his fourth goal of the season, pulled one back 19 minutes from time before Russ Cowley tied the game with four minutes left.

Nevertheless, within 40 seconds Tait – a two-time Elite League winner during five years with Blaze – popped up with the winner for Sheffield.

It was Coventry’s third straight loss but Thompson said: “I am upset with the defeat but not the performance. Had we played like that last night it might have been a different story.

“The passion and commitment was there and that is something I want to see every night. Hard work should come for free.

“We played well and deserved something from the game. But I am demanding some consistency right now and guys need to be more accountable.

“That is three losses in a row now and Championship-winning sides don’t do that.”
