The hockey season is back, and you can follow it all with us right here on BIH.
We are working on an archive of matches, stats and players from BIH in the past few years.
Top of the table Nottingham Panthers have acted to boost their squad with the addition of former first round draft pick Mario Larocque.
The six feet three inch Canadian defenceman could make his debut as early as this weekend.
Paperwork and flights are being organised for the French-Canadian who has played in Austria and Italy as well as the top professional leagues in North America.
In 1998-99 he played five games “in the show” for the Tampa Bay Lightning who drafted him 16th overall in 1996.
Super Mario has played in the AHL, IHL ECHL and the UHL. He is known to several of the current Panthers’ squad and played for Fort Wayne in 2006-07 where he scored 27 goals and had 40 assists and 231 penalty minutes in their championship winning season.
Larocque was named defenceman of the league and his team. He was also the first defenceman to score that many goals.
Last year the 31-year-old played in Italy and then Austria.
GMB Panthers coach Corey Neilson said of his latest signing : “He is going to help the team. He is a solid defenceman with good skills and can play as tough as is needed. He’s going to help us consolidate our season.”
A decision will be made on who will make room for Larocque shortly when the club’s injury problems are more clear-cutMeanwhile British utility player James Ferrara has been released but the GMB Panthers are hoping to re-sign him on a two-way contract with a team in the English Premier League and negotiations are on-going on that front.
The club wishes to place on record its thanks to “Feds” for his efforts in recent years and praised him for always giving his best regardless of which position he was asked to jump into. It is hoped that a spell ‘in the minors’ will help him progress and the door is not closed on a career with the Nottingham organisation.
