Third goal killed us - Clouts
Excel Hull Stingrays player-coach Sylvain Cloutier admitted losing a goal early in the third period was a hammer blow to his side as they went down 5-2 to Coventry Blaze at the Skydome.
Stephen Burns handed Stingrays an early lead but Luke Fulghum and Adam Calder helped Blaze move 2-1 ahead going into the final period. Two markers inside 37 seconds from Calder (powerplay) and Greg Owen put Coventry in control and although Burns' second of the night gave his side hope with 10 minutes left, Derek Campbell's strike wrapped up the points for the hosts.
Cloutier said: "Going into the third period 2-1 down on the road things were looking OK. But losing the third quickly was a blow and took the wind out of us. We lost energy for some reason and we looked a defeated team after that. Our heads went down and they kept coming and they showed why they are a first-placed team.
"For two periods we were right in the game but we then ran into penalty trouble and being disciplined was something we talked about. You can’t take penalties against a team like Coventry because they have a good powerplay. I am disappointed but over the weekend we have played five good periods out of six. We will now prepare for two huge home games next weekend."
