Thompson hails Cowley
CPP Coventry Blaze coach Paul Thompson has paid tribute to Russell Cowley as the Great Britain international prepares to celebrate his testimonial tomorrow night.
The Edmonton-born 28-year-old began his career with Swindon Wildcats before joining Blaze in 2001.
During his time at the club, Cowley has won the league three times and the Knock-Out Cup and Challenge Cup once as well as being part of the Grand Slam side in 2004/05.
Cowley is an established GB international too and helped his country win a silver medal in Ukraine in 2011.
Thompson said: “Anyone who plays 10 years at a club is obviously doing something right - and Russell has.
“He is a great kid on and off the ice, he represents our club in a professional manner whether he is on the ice, whether he is out at a school or just out on the street.
“I am really excited for him and proud of him for his achievements as a player.
“The biggest thing is you want to enjoy the day and enjoy everything you have done in your career. A lot of people are coming back for him.
“When three or four guys fly in from Canada, it tells you what the club means to them as well and what Russell means to them.
“We are a very tight-knit club and have looked after players very well. That shows with the response the players give each other by coming back and celebrating Russell’s testimonial.”
