CPP Coventry Blaze coach Paul Thompson knows a four-point weekend over Braehead Clan will enhance their prospects of a top-four finish in the Rapid Solicitors Elite League.

Blaze go into tomorrow’s clash in Glasgow sitting in fifth place and five points behind Cardiff Devils with 12 games remaining.

The four meetings with Clan so far this season have gone with home advantage and Thompson is looking to buck that trend.

He said: “We are trailing a bit behind Cardiff and it is imperative we get something out of this weekend and there is no reason why we shouldn’t.

“We played pretty well up there in the last two games and have been unlucky not to come away with the points.

“Braehead are a good team with a lot of quality. They have some quality individuals who can change games and that is something we are aware of.

“We played pretty well last weekend [against Sheffield] but it would be nice to pick up some points this weekend regardless of the performance.

“We are in a results-based business and I just want to win games and I will never dress it up any other way.

“A top-four finish is what we are targeting as it will give us home ice advantage for the second game [in the play-offs]. That is our aim.

“Coventry is expected to be a top four team. We have had a lot of challenges this year and we have got over bigger challenges than trying to finish fourth.”

Meanwhile, teenage forward Ross Venus has been named in the Great Britain Under-18 squad for their World Championship campaign in Holland next month. Netminder Adam Goss and defenceman Matt Selby have been selected as reserves.

Blaze take on Braehead Clan at the Skydome in the Rapid Solicitors Elite League on Sunday February 19 (6pm face-off). Tickets can be purchased by ringing the Box Office on 02476 630693 (option 0) or by booking online at www.coventryblaze.co.uk.
