A determined Braehead Clan chalked up a fourth straight win on Saturday to maintain their challenge for a place among the league’s elite. Drew Bannister’s side have closed to within just two points of fifth-placed Cardiff Devils, who will be well aware of the Glaswegians’ desire to break into the top half of the table.
Following surprise festive wins away to league-leading Belfast and at home to second placed Nottingham, which came either side of a nervy home victory against lowly Dundee, Clan knew anything less than a win over struggling Hull Stingrays would be a major letdown.
The Yorkshiremen arrived in Scotland’s metropolis eager to avoid a seventh road defeat on the trot, and it was clear from the outset they would give nothing away cheaply. It was a credible display from the visitors whose effort, organisation and resolute defending ensured Clan got only those chances they earned.
An early break saw Adam Walker give Clan a lead they were never likely to let slip. A long pass from Jade Galbraith bounced fully twenty metres down the ice to find the Fife-born winger bearing down on goal, despite the best efforts of two defenders who launched themselves in vane attempts to intercept.
Walker did well to bring the puck under control and calmly sent it past Hull netminder Christian Boucher. The home side’s lead was doubled five minutes later when Jordan Krestanovich tucked home from close range after crisp passing by Jorgensen and Galbraith found a gap in the Hull defence.
Clan’s ever-reliable goalie Jaakko Suomalainen denied Stingrays’ right wing Jason Silverthorn in a one-on-one from close range, but the Finnish stopper got little help from his defencemen who reacted too late to prevent Jereme Tendler gathering the loose puck. He found Derek Campbell free at the crease and he made no mistake, halving the deficit in the eleventh minute.
A tight affair saw few clear chances at either end, though Braehead were comfortable throughout. Their two goal lead was restored twelve minutes from the end with the forward line of Walker, Galbraith and Krestanovich again combining to bag Krestanovich’s second goal of the night and make sure the points stayed in Glasgow.
The three-one scoreline was a fair reflection of a result which never seemed in doubt but was never put beyond it. If the mark of a successful team is knowing how to win when not playing at their best, then Clan may finally be ready to claim a place among the top few clubs in Britain.
