Canadian defenceman Trevor Read has set his sights on improving the fortunes of Hull Stingrays this season.

Stingrays have finished in the bottom two in all four of their Elite League campaigns so far but with 10 teams competing this time – with Braehead Clan and Dundee Stars joining - Read is optimistic that statistic will change.

The 29-year-old Calgary native, no stranger to the Elite League having iced for Basingstoke Bison during the 2008/09 season, said: “The first goal is to always reach the play-offs as it’s the best hockey of the year. We have a good team, it’s a competitive league and you have to hard every night, if we do that we will be fine. I know it’s early yet but we have some really good players on our team.

“You always want to look forward - you don’t want to move backwards. From what I have seen so far the club is moving in the right direction.”

Read began his career with Fort Saskatchewan Traders in the Alberta Junior Hockey League and then spent a season with South Alberta Institute of Technology in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference before turning professional in 2002 when he joined Toledo Storm of the ECHL, helping them win the divisional title.

The following season Read split his time between Toledo and ECHL rivals Peoria Rivermen and Long Beach Ice Dogs, where he stayed until 2005 before moving to the Central Hockey League with Austin Ice Bats.

After a brief spell, Read finished the 2005/06 season with Amarillo Gorillas (CHL) and enjoyed two more years with them until a move to Europe materialised, with Basingstoke his destination. Last season he was in France with Gap HC.

But returning to the Elite League was always on Read’s agenda and now he is relishing the opening game of the season against Cardiff Devils in the Challenge Cup at Hull Arena on Sunday (6pm face-off).

He said: “Although the situation in Basingstoke was tough, especially mentally, I really liked the North-American style of play in the Elite League. I am familiar with the league and it’s very competitive.

“I'm very excited to be part of the Hull Stingrays organisation this year. To be honest I am chomping at the bit, I just want to get going now.”

Player-coach Sylvain Cloutier has signed several players this summer who have had experience of winning a championship and Read believes that will play a huge part this season.

“There is a fine line with experience and it normally pays off in the end, especially in the third period of games when it’s a time for cool heads,” Read said. “It’s always a good thing to have guys who know what it takes to win a championship, you can never have too many of them.”
