Chelmsford Chieftains came from 3-1 down against league leaders Invicta Dynamos on Sunday night in Kent to snatch a well-earned 3-3 draw, thanks to a double from Matt Turner in the third period.

The Chieftains had struggled to get going early on and slipped behind by 2-0 going into the first break as Canadian Daniel Calitiri and former Chelmsford player Callum Fowler notched a goal apiece in a one-sided first period. Head coach Dean Birrell must have given the team the 'hairdryer' treatment in the first period break as the Chieftains stepped onto the ice looking a different side. Well, for the first 19 seconds they did, until Calitiri got his second. This really woke the Chieftains up and they began to battle and hustle the Dynamos and deservedly got back into it thanks to Darren Brown picking up a goal on 24:23. The rest of the period saw some great end to end action with both Euan King and Joe White pulling of big saves for their respective sides to end the second at 3-1 to the home side.

Matt Turner has been a revelation at the Chieftains this season and this shone through in a third period where the Chieftains threw everything at the Dynamos and were rewarded with 2 goals in 37 seconds with just under 9minutes to go. Turner fired home and while the large travelling fans were still celebrating, he skated into space and put the puck past Joe White and it was 3-3. It was a nervy final few minutes though when on 56minutes the Chieftains took an elbowing penalty and were on the penalty kill for 2minutes, but King and his team held firm to round out a great performance to come from behind against the reigning league champions.

The man of the match awards went to Turner and Invicta netminder Joe White for exceptional displays and a great advert for English National League ice hockey. Add to that the excellent 7-1 win in Bracknell the night before, Birrell and the Chieftains can rightly be delighted with the results this weekend and will be looking to build on them in the coming weeks.

Next up for the Chieftains is the small matter of the Essex derby on Saturday 30th October at 5:40pm when local and hated rivals Romford Raiders head up the A12 for a Halloween special. Fancy dress is encouraged and prizes will be given out for the best, as will free sweets for kids attending the game. With attendances up on last season already, the Chieftains management encourage fans to arrive early as the doors open at 5:15 and the game faces off 25mins later.

Sunday will see the Chieftains make the long journey to south Wales to take on the Cardiff ENL Devils, while at the Riverside the Chelmsford Warriors will be taking on the Basingstoke Buffalo in what will be a hotly contested game as both sides are in need of the points, even at this early stage of the season.

Chelmsford Warriors V Basingstoke Buffalo - Sunday 31st October @18:30
