Unlucky 13 for Stingrays

Excel Hull Stingrays just failed to pull off a fantastic fightback as they went down 7-6 to Elite League title-chasing Nottingham Panthers in a goal-fest at Hull Arena.

Panthers, who started with back-up goaltender Geoff Woolhouse after Kevin St Pierre picked up a knock during the penalty shots win over Sheffield Steelers last night, took a 3-1 first-period lead thanks to goals from Jade Galbraith and Cameron Mann (2), with George Halkidis replying for Stingrays.

Halkidis got his second of the game just 56 seconds into the second period but markers from Mann, to complete his hat-trick, Marty Gascon and Bruce Richardson put Panthers in control at 6-2 up.

However, Adam Knight, Jason Silverthorn and Curtis Huppe (powerplay) cut the deficit to one, Jay Henderson (powerplay) then edged Panthers into a two-goal lead but Konstantin Kalmikov – with his 35th strike of the campaign - set up a tense finish with Stingrays unable to force overtime.

In the eight league meetings between the sides this season, they have produced a staggering 65 goals at an average of just over eight a game.

Player-coach Sylvain Cloutier said: “We had a big road win in Newcastle last night, it’s a tough building to go and play and get the two points. The guys did a great job. Tonight we have to take the positives, we never quit and kept battling to the end.”

Stingrays are back in action on Wednesday when they welcome Newcastle to Hull Arena (7.30pm face-off) for the first of two home encounters in five days with the north-east side, who return on Sunday.
