Matti Uusivirta scored twice as Hull Stingrays snapped a five-game losing streak with a 6-3 victory at Edinburgh Capitals in the Elite League.

The Finnish forward, who had gone through a spell of just one goal in 14 matches, has now netted three times in as many outings.

His first goal came when he cancelled out a Bari McKenzie opener for Capitals within 39 seconds.

Top scorer Jereme Tendler – with his 34th marker of the season - and youngster Ben Lowe, only his second senior goal, then opened up a 3-1 advantage for Stingrays.

Martin Cingel cut the deficit for Capitals but Ryan Lake, Uusivirta’s second and another from Andrew Coburn made it 6-2 before McKenzie’s second.

Player-coach Sylvain Cloutier said: “It was a big win for us because we really need the points.

“We played OK. Some guys got a bit carried away and got away from the game-plan. But it doesn’t matter how you get the points, we found a way to win.

“Uusi got a couple of big goals for us and his line with Coburn and Tendler produced tonight. It was good to see Ben get another goal. He has been playing well recently and he has taken his chance.

“Give Edinburgh credit. They have got a couple more bodies in and they work hard and never quit.”

The teams meet again at Hull Arena tomorrow night and Cloutier is expecting his side to complete a four-point weekend.

He added: “We need those two points. We need to keep plugging away and picking up points to move further away from Dundee and closer to Braehead.”

Former National Hockey League defenceman Drew Bannister (groin) is unlikely to return to the line-up tomorrow night.
