Jamie Vanderveeken

The Cardiff Devils are delighted to announce the signing of defenceman Jamie Vanderveeken from Fassa in Italy. The 6’ 2”, 215lbs native of Wallaceburg, Ontario is excited about joining the Devils and flies in tomorrow (Tuesday) to join his teammates.

Devils CEO Paul Ragan recently gave Head Coach Gerad Adams the go-ahead to look for the right players to strengthen the squad and whilst Adams planned on being patient, the opportunity to bring the talented blueliner in was too good to miss, he says.

'We tried to bring Jamie to Cardiff a couple of seasons ago but that didn’t work out. When his name popped up I spoke to Paul (Ragan) and with his support we have been able to make a great move to boost the team.

Jamie is an offensive-minded defenceman who comes to us with great recommendations. He has a cannon of a shot and his offensive ability will really help us up-ice and take the pressure of our defensive players who have been so huge for us lately.

We are looking to Jamie to strengthen our D and use his attributes (on the Powerplay in particular) to generate more offense from the back.’ Prior to Italy Vanderveeken spent three seasons in Rapid City and a spell with Arizona in the CHL, and 72 games for the K-wing of Kalamazoo in the IHL

Devils became aware of Vanderveeken’s availability on the weekend and Bench Coach Neil Francis says a real team effort has brought the latest Cardiff Devil to South Wales.

'From the top down, everyone has worked to bring Jamie over. We’ve had strong support for this from Paul Ragan and once we agreed terms with Jamie the team went to work. Sully (Productions Manager Paul Sullivan) and Cudds (Ops manager Mark Cuddihy) got onto the immigration and ITC paperwork immediately and we’ve all worked over the weekend to make this happen. The EIHL staff have been great too making sure we had all we needed to make this the fastest Cardiff Devils signing, probably ever!’

As for the new player on his bench, Francis is genuinely excited and so is Vanderveeken, he says.

‘It’s a tough job to come straight into a new team, especially for such a big game, but Jamie is really fired up at the prospect and can’t wait to get going.

Our defenceman have been superb lately, playing shorthanded night after night. They’ve been immense, particularly Kenton Smith and Mark Richardson, just eating up the minutes every game. All our guys at the back are looking forward to the help that Jamie will provide.

He will help us up front whilst playing a defensively responsible game. We will be looking to use that huge shot of his on the PP and give our opposition another factor to consider.’

To see Jamie Vanderveeken make his debut for the Devils in the MUST-WIN Challenge cup elimination game this Friday 23rd, call the box office NOW on 029 20 382001 or visit www.cardiffdevils.com/tickets.
