Newcastle Vipers have entered the North American college market to sign up 25 year old forward Dale Mahovsky straight from the University of Alberta.
The 6ft 200lb man becomes Danny Stewart's latest addition as the build up continues to the new Elite League season in September.
This summer the pool of players available to Elite League clubs has been widened to include players straight from University in North America, and the Vipers have pounced to take Mahovsky from one of the top schools in Canada.
Coach Danny Stewart said today: "Dale comes to us from probably one of the top 3 University programs in Canada. The University of Alberta has been one of the top 5 teams consistently over the last 4 years and Dale won a National Championship with them in 2007-08.
"Dale also has a great junior career with the Kootenay Ice of the Western Hockey league averaging just under a point a game in his last last three seasons, his best season coming in 2004-05 when he had 71 points and 112 penalty minutes. He also won a championship, the Memorial Cup, with the Kootenay Ice in 2001-02.
"He is a proven winner and a great kid on and off the ice. He is exactly the type of player and person we want to bring to Newcastle."
Speaking on what the Alberta native will bring to the Vipers lineup, Stewart added: "Dale will be a point threat for us this season, but as well can play in all situations and is sound in all areas of the rink. He has versatility in the fact that he can play centre and wing so it gives us more options with our line-up.
"He also plays with a physical edge and will be a guy who will compete for the club night in and night out and not shy away from the rough stuff. I am delighted with this signing and its great to have some fresh and young blood to the league and the club."
Mahovsky is Danny Stewart's tenth signing and fourth import for the 2010 Elite League season, which sees the Vipers play their home games at Whitley Bay Ice Rink against nine other teams from across the UK.
Mahovsky attended NHL camps in 2004 with St Louis and 2005 with Atlanta before studying four years at the University of Alberta.
The player said today: "After graduation I wanted to pursue my professional career, and wanted a chance where I can prove myself, get plenty of minutes and be put into different game situations.
"With Danny in place and with the Vipers I feel this is an amazing chance to do so.
"I hope to be a building block in the transformation of the Newcastle Vipers this season."
