Four unanswered goals helped Excel Hull Stingrays complete a four-point weekend following a 6-3 victory over Newcastle Vipers at Hull Arena in the Elite League.

Pavel Gomenyuk gave Stingrays an early lead before a Matic Kralj brace saw Vipers edge ahead. A superb short-handed marker from Lee Mitchell tied the scores only for Jerraime Domish to put the visitors back in front.

Captain Jeff Glowa restored parity again before another short-handed goal, this time from Stephen Burns, turned the game in Stingrays’ favour with Jason Silverthorn extending their lead.

Newcastle pulled goaltender Michel Robinson in a bid to get back into the game but Glowa added the insurance goal with an empty-net strike with 20 seconds remaining. Mitchell picked up an assist on that goal which was his 100th Elite League point.

Stingrays’ third successive win this week took them to 41 points, which is a franchise record in the Elite League, and they have now won seven of their last nine at home.

Player-coach Sylvain Cloutier said: “It has been a great week for us. It was a team effort and everybody showed up for the three games. We played as a team, everybody did their jobs and that is why we are winning hockey games.

“We are taking it a game at a time and will just keep plugging away before the play-offs. The guys have done a great job and you have to give them credit because it is paying off for them now.”
