Vipers thrilled with new Elite League format

Mobilx Vipers General Manager Jaimie Longmuir welcomed today's announcement by the League of the 2010-2011 competition format.

The new nine-team League will see only six teams qualify for playoffs, giving real importance to the second half of the season.

"I'm very pleased that the League have released this information so soon, it shows that we are already planning ahead of time and hopefully with the change to playoff qualification making the League more competitive," said Longmuir.

"The team owners have been discussing these proposals for several weeks now, and have been looking at ways of moving the League forward and improving the on-ice product which our fans pay to see each week.

"The Vipers are delighted with the direction the League is moving, and today's announcement and those to follow will show that Newcastle and the League as a whole have a very positive future.

"From our own point of view, it's great to have a new team in Braehead giving a new opponent for us and a new venue for our fans to visit.  The League format again makes it more competitive with the six-from-nine qualification criteria, so each and every game is important.

"This season has been very tough on the business, the staff and most importantly the fans - we knew with the split season it would be tough.  But having come through this, we can only go into the new season as a stronger group - staff, players and fans together - and build a successful Vipers club for many seasons to come."

Tonight the Vipers are at home to Hull Stingrays (6.30pm at Whitley Bay Ice Rink), with home games against Edinburgh (13th March, 6.30pm) and Nottingham (21st March, 7.30pm) to complete the regular season.

Tickets for all remaining games can be obtained from the club shop in Shakespeare Street, by telephone 0191 2610909 or online at vipershockey.co.uk.
