New Whitley Warriors coach Garry Dowd has confirmed the first four signings for the new campaign, with three players being a part of the double winning side from last season; while one returns to Hillheads after a year away.

Martin Crammond, Calvin Khass and Callum Watson were all with Whitley last season, while defender Rob Wilson returns after spending the early part of the 2010/11 campaign with the Newcastle Vipers.

“Rob is a massive signing for us,” said Dowd, “he is a very experienced player and although things didn’t work out for him in Newcastle - he was injured for most of his time there - we are delighted to have someone of his calibre back on the Warriors blue line.”

Both Watson and Crammond had break-out seasons at Whitley last season and the new coach will be looking for them to continue that form come September.

“Martin stepped up to the plate when Karl Culley was injured for a significant part of the season,” he said, “and showed how valuable he is to the team with a string of impressive performances.

“And in Callum Watson we have a player who has the knack of scoring some very valuable goals,” he added.

“Winning the Hillheads Player Of The Year title last season shows how well thought of he is and I will be looking to Callum to use his fantastic speed to get into even more goal scoring situations over the coming months.”

Finally, Dowd has confirmed that netminder Calvin Khass will be with the team again next season: “He probably had the hardest job in the squad last year,” admitted the coach, “because he was back-up to an outstanding James Flavell, but he was always ready to step in and never let the side down once.”

Meanwhile, Garry Dowd is continuing his re-shaping of the Warriors squad and expects to announce more players soon, but has organised an Open Practice for Thursday July 7th (starting at 9.15pm) when any ice hockey players are welcome to come along and try-out for a place in the squad.
