The hockey season is back, and you can follow it all with us right here on BIH.
We are working on an archive of matches, stats and players from BIH in the past few years.
Despite this being his first season in the Elite League, Mobilx Newcastle Vipers assistant captain Jason Tejchma believes he has seen enough talent in his team-mates to suggest they can be a top four team this season. The Vipers travel to Coventry tonight for a top of the table clash with the Blaze then return to Tyneside to face the Belfast Giants tomorrow (5.30pm face-off).
“I’ll be honest, I didn’t know what to expect of the league or the standard before I came over” confirmed Tejchma. “Obviously I’d played the last few years in North America and in the ECHL so you hear different things about Europe. There’s a lot of guys over here that I have played with in the past so I knew it must have been a decent standard. However, I’ve been very impressed with the league, it’s an extremely high level and I have heard it’s better this year than it has been in recent seasons. You’ve just got to look around the league, when the likes of Edinburgh have Chris Allen and Nottingham have Cameron Mann you realise it’s strong from top to bottom.”
Despite the Vipers currently sitting in third place in the Elite League standings, Tejchma was quick to point out that he thought the Vipers had some outstanding talent in their roster.
“I don’t think we’ve got any out and out stars like some other teams have, but overall as a unit we’re very effective” said Tejchma. “I do think Jerramie Domish is one of the best if not the best defenceman in the league and Michel in nets is a very solid netminder who is up there with the best on any given night. We know we’re not going to be able to run and gun against the likes of Belfast, Coventry and Nottingham, but we play to our strengths and I believe that’s why we have been successful so far.
“This weekend is huge for us, Coventry is a hard place to get anything out of but the guys are all pumped and want to continue being around the top of the table. Tomorrow night against Belfast is important for us, in the Challenge Cup they came to Whitley, we didn’t play out best that night and they came away with the win. We want to make that right and we’re a focused group right now with the aim of coming away with four points this weekend.
The Vipers welcome the Belfast Giants to the Metro Radio Arena tomorrow (5.30pm face-off). Tickets will be available on the door right up until face-off.
