Excel Hull Stingrays player-coach Sylvain Cloutier felt his side’s 5-2 loss to Coventry Blaze at Hull Arena flattered the Elite League leaders.

Jason Robinson and Derek Campbell handed Coventry a 2-0 lead, James Archer pulled one back before Greg Owen restored the visitors’ two-goal cushion. Jason Silverthorn reduced the arrears again but a powerplay marker from Jonathan Weaver in the 58th minute secured the points before Luke Fulghum added an insurance goal with 85 seconds left.

Cloutier said: “The score does not reflect the way we played. I thought we played a pretty good game against the top team in the league. I thought we were all over them in the second and third period. But their first three goals we gave to them, they didn’t earn it.

“But we came back and got a bad call at the end there. I don’t think it was a penalty but obviously Mr Carson saw it different. That penalty hurt us. But there were a load of positives. We outplayed the top team in the league for most of the game.”
