With one win and one loss against Coventry Blaze already this season, tonight the Whitley Warriors had to go into the game with the fight and drive to win a game that would give them the edge over the Blaze.

Right from the off the game was a heated competition with both teams desperate for possession of the puck and getting the big hits in early. After only two and a half minutes the Warriors looked set to go one goal up, with the fans leaving their seats to celebrate the early lead, but this was quickly ruled out by the officials as Callum Patterson instead drew a two minute minor for interference quickly ending the home crowd’s jubilance and putting more coal on the fire under the Warriors that would eventually lead to a goal half way through the first from Daniel Good with an assist from Calum Watson.

Not even a minute later and tempers started flying out of control when a late check on Warriors defenseman Ali Brummet provoked the retaliation that landed Brummet a double minor for interference and roughing, and a two minute cross checking minor for Coventry forward Philip Pollok. Coventry came out heavy on the attack forcing a fantastic blocker save from Warriors goaltender David Lawrence at 10:55 keeping the Warriors lead intact.

The Warriors went on the power play after Rhys McWilliams took a 2 minute for hooking at 10:59 giving the Warriors a 4 on 3. Coventry defenseman Aidan Mahmud takes a hooking call at 12:02 extending the Warriors power play which Shaun Kippin was able to convert at 12:48 to extend the Warriors lead to 2-0 with an assist from Calum Watson and Josh Maddock. This lead was short lived as it was quickly cut to 2-1 by Josh Nicklin with an assist from Micheal Steventon. Frustration started to show in the teams as the hits got heavier and words were exchanged between Warriors Robert Wilson and Blaze’s Micheal Steventon towards the end of the first.

As the second period starts the Warriors seemed to have taken their foot off the gas as the Blaze had them pinned in their defensive zone for most of the period and the frustration getting to the Warriors making sloppy passes and desperate choices reflected in Robert Wilson landing a game misconduct and a 5 minute major call for boarding on Coventry’s Tom Ledgard causing Ledgard to have to leave the ice for medical attention after some heavy bleeding from his head. There was an extended pause whist the ice was cleaned of Ledgard’s blood and the Warriors sent over youngster Jordan Barnes to serve the 5 minute penalty. The game got underway again with a face off and a little over two minutes later, Whitley were sent to the box again after David Barrett drew a high sticking minor.

The Warriors began to fight back in the second half of the second with Christian Johnson getting on a breakaway but failed to score past Coventry goaltender Adam Goss. Drawing near to the end of the second and the referee calls a penalty on Warriors player David Barrett, already in the penalty box, and gives him a ten minute personal for misconduct driving the Whitley Bay crowd berserk with anger to end the second period.

The Whitley Warriors started the third period again with a minor penalty with Ali Brummet drawing a hooking penalty to stop a Coventry breakaway in the early stages of the final stage of this exciting game. Having killed off another penalty as Coventry did not seem to be capitalizing on their chances on the power play, Jordan Barnes scores past a out of position and beaten Goss to extend Warriors lead to two goals, making it 3-1 with 12:50 left on the clock. Midway through the third and the Warriors take two penalties in quick succession putting Coventry on a 5-on-3 power play and give them a chance to redeem the poor power play form they have displayed tonight, and they do. Ten seconds before time running out on the 5-on-3, Kieran Papps with assists from Tom Pease and Rhys McWilliams manage to reduce the Warriors lead to 3-2, piling the pressure on for the last 8 minutes. Not long after and Warriors are on the attack again, forcing a brilliant save from the young Coventry goalie to keep them in the game.

Five minutes left on the clock and Warrior’s Christian Johnson is called for delay of game as the puck leaves the ice and is collected by some young supporters sitting in front of me. Coming into the last couple of minutes and the tension is building as offside is called against Coventry. The Warriors successfully kill the delay of game call and are back to full strength as they go on the attack again and the puck is pulled across the face of the goal to Daniel Good to fires it just wide of the near post in what would have most certainly put this game to bed. The Blaze call a time-out in the dying minute to regroup and plan a last play and grab a chance to tie it up. The Warriors defense stays strong and pushes the play out wide and into the corner as the buzzer goes to end this third meeting this season for these two teams and they line up and shake hands as the fans give both teams a stand ovation for the performance and another win on the board for the Whitley Warriors.
