Whitley Warriors have signed former Newcastle Vipers forward Dean Holland.

Holland began the season with EPL outfit Telford Tigers and is also on a two-way contract with Elite League side Dundee Stars and Whitley coach Garry Dowd is delighted with his latest acquisition.

“Things weren’t going the way Dean had hoped at Telford,” the coach said, “so we were very happy when he indicated he like to play for the Warriors.

“He certainly brings a lot to the Whitley bench,” added Dowd, “Dean has good skating ability, reads the game very well and has good physical presence; so he will make us a better side for sure.

“Because we aren’t 100% certain his registration will be through in time, Dean will play for Dundee in the early part of the weekend, but should make his Warriors debut against Coventry.

However, before the Coventry game Dowd took his side to Telford early today and was looking for a much better performance than when they went down 7-3 there a month ago.

“It feels like we have a little unfinished business down there,” confessed the coach, “we arrived late last time because of heavy traffic and didn’t have a proper warm-up; and that showed in the game when we were perhaps embarrassed a little bit.

“But this time we will go down with the right frame of mind and try to reverse the result, because we know what our side is capable of, and we can get the points if we put our mind to it.”

Similarly Coventry ENL Blaze were 7-3 winners when they entertained the Warriors a couple of weeks ago, although Dowd felt that score line was a little flattering to the Midland outfit.

“For most of the night the two sides were very evenly matched and it was only in the closing stages, when we lost our discipline a little, that they managed to ease away,” he said.

“But we have been working on that side of our game and I am looking for big improvements in that area, not just this weekend, but in all our future matches.”

Having won away to Solihull Barons last Sunday with a depleted squad, Dowd has several players back for this weekend’s games.

“Rob Wilson, Ally Brummitt and Phil Pritchard all return to the defence,” he confirmed, “while Harry Harley and Christian Johnson are again available after turning out for the Under 19 squad last weekend, to boost our attack; and we obviously hope to include Dean on Sunday.

“That should give us a much stronger squad and I believe it is a side that should be good enough to grab a couple of wins.”
