Mobilx Newcastle Vipers co-owner and head coach Rob Wilson today indicated that there could be light at the end of the tunnel and the future could be a bright one for North East Ice Hockey. Following the 'Drive for 5' weekend which saw the Vipers achieve a franchise record of 4,128 against the Sheffield Steelers last night, Wilson feels this is an ideal opportunity to carry on with the feel good factor.

"We were very happy with the weekend, overall it was a major success for us on and off the ice" confirmed Wilson. "Thank you to all the fans that came along and also special thanks to the fans that have continued to support us through thick and thin, without that the weekend wouldn't have been possible or anywhere near the success it was.

"I'd also like to go on record and thank the Cardiff and Sheffield fans that travelled too, overall everything contributed to a successful weekend for the club.

"Against Cardiff on Saturday and more so Sheffield last night the atmosphere was buzzing from the first face-off and that gave a major boost to the guys. To come away from the two games with a maximum of four points is very encouraging right now, following the defeat to Belfast last week our heads dropped somewhat and we needed something to get us back in with a shout.

"For the first time in a long time I came away very upbeat about our future and focused on what we need to do to make this a success on and off the ice. The North East deserves a top flight club and if we get anywhere near the attendances we did at the weekend it will make life a lot easier".

Looking ahead to the Vipers return to Whitley Bay Ice Rink and the visit of the Coventry Blaze on Saturday (6.30pm face-off), Wilson feels that the team will be well suited to the Hillheads Road rink.

"Obviously we didn't do to well in our Challenge Cup games there" said Wilson. "That's in the past now and I feel with the addition of Mark (Rooneem) and the way we're playing right now I think we'll be able to cycle the puck well in there and not many teams will be able to cope with us. We've got to use Whitley to our advantage, we're the home team and we know what to expect. It's a unique place and if we can entice a percentage of the support from the weekend to Whitley, the atmosphere would be electric.

Advance sale tickets for Saturday's clash against the Coventry Blaze are available now from the Vipers shop in Shakespeare Street, by telephone on 0191 261 0909 or online at: www.vipershockey.co.uk.
