Winning start for Raitums
Martins Raitums produced a man-of-the-match debut display to steer Excel Hull Stingrays to a 3-2 victory over Elite League title-chasing Belfast Giants at Hull Arena. The Latvian goaltender made 37 saves as Stingrays ended a four-game losing run. Konstantin Kalmikov (Hull) and Colin Shields traded goals before captain Jeff Glowa (short-handed) and Pavel Gomenyuk gave the home side a two-goal cushion. Pierre-Luc Faubert pulled one back with six minutes left but Belfast could not force overtime. Player-coach Sylvain Cloutier said: “It was a big win for us. We have been playing good hockey for a month-and-a-half and have been outplaying some of the top sides but have had nothing to show for it. “But we told the guys to stay positive and keep believing and we produced a great team performance. Marty [Raitums] played well and made some big saves. He was nervous before the game but made a couple of saves and settled down. He was composed and nothing rattled him.”
