Brett Ferguson’s Elite League career isn’t over.

The former Guildford Flames captain inked a one-year contract with the Cardiff Devils on Monday [10 November], recruited by Paul Thompson as injury cover.

Ferguson boasts a wealth of experience, including eight seasons in the Elite League and pitstops in the ECHL and Slovak Extraliga.

“Brett’s game will suit our style of play,” said Thompson.

“His experience of the league and his leadership skills will make us an even better team. He plays hard at both ends of the ice and he is difficult to play against. I’m very pleased we were able to pick up a player of Brett’s ability.”

Ferguson’s journey started in the Western Hockey League, where he spent three seasons with the Red Deer Rebels.

The Vibank-born forward was a prolific scorer throughout his major junior career, notching 124 points (43 goals, 81 assists) in 212 appearances before ascending into USports.

Through four seasons at the University of Alberta, Ferguson scored 118 points (38 goals, 80 assists) in 123 games, helping the Golden Bears win the 2013-14 University Cup as an All-Star Team selectee.

He spent brief spells with the Cincinnati Cyclones (ECHL) and Gap (Ligue Magnus) before finding a permanent home with the Flames.

Ferguson spent seven seasons in Surrey, including four as captain, scoring 316 points (105 goals, 211 assists) in 353 regular-season appearances.

The 35-year-old announced his departure from Guildford in April, but stopped short of confirming his retirement.

Why have the Cardiff Devils signed Brett Ferguson?

Ferguson’s move to the Devils is a match made in heaven.

With Nolan Yaremko sidelined long-term with a lower-body injury (and having already missed seven of Cardiff’s 19 fixtures), Thompson was in dire need of an offensive reinforcement.

And Ferguson is quite the catch.

While the Canadian’s production has fallen back in recent years (from a career-high 67 points in 2022-23 to 33 points last term), he remains a highly useful player at centre or on the wing.

His arrival will also come as a boost to the Devils locker room.

Flying high in the Elite League standings, Cardiff’s decision to add a well-respected veteran to their roster is a show of confidence (from ownership and coaching staff) in their title credentials.

Ferguson arrives just in time for the Devils’ Scottish triple header this weekend and is expected to draw into the line-up in a third line role.

Given his lack of game sharpness, supporters shouldn’t expect him to tear up trees from the off.

But Ferguson has all the makings of a knockout mid-season addition for Cardiff.
