Cardiff Devils have announced the signing of imposing defenceman Steven MacLean.

Standing at 6’7, MacLean joins the Devils after spending the previous two seasons with Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL.

He played 109 games for the Cyclones over the past two seasons, scoring three goals and a further 17 assists for 20 points.

Maclean played four years at Wilfrid Laurier University before turning pro after his last game in the Canadian Usports league.

He made the move to Cincinnati for their final 21 games of the season, featuring in 11 playoff games that year as well.

MacLean arrival softens injury blow

The Devils were dealt an injury blow last week when they found out that Cedric Lacroix would miss 6-8 weeks with an upper body injury.

MacLean has been described as the “ideal fit” for the Devils, who were already on the lookout for reinforcements after the departure of Brodie Kay at the end of pre-season.

“We have been looking for a defenceman for a few weeks now, and Steven is a good fit,” head coach Paul Thompson.

“He is a big strong defensive defenceman who skates well. Our defensive core has been great this season, but with Lacroix out short-term, we always have the option to move Evan Mosey up front.

“Signing Steven gives us some options and also provides additional cover on the blueline for the season.

“We are excited to get him here this week and get him game ready.”
