Forward Mike Hammond said it was a “special moment” to score his first Great Britain goal in their World Championship opener with Germany in Kosice.

Hammond, playing in his sixth game for GB, scored in the third period to tie the game at 1-1 before Germany netted two quick goals to secure a 3-1 victory.

“Of course, it was very special to get my first GB goal on such a big occasion,” said Hammond.

“I took advantage of a mistake and it was a great moment to tie the game.

“I thought we put in a battling performance and really took it to them, so we can be positive about many things.

“We are disappointed that we didn’t win but that shows our expectations have risen for sure.”

GB return to action tomorrow evening as they face Canada, who were beaten 3-1 by Finland on opening day.

“Tomorrow’s game is one we are all looking forward to playing in,” added Hammond.

“It will be a massive challenge for us but the spirit in the camp is fantastic and we are ready for a huge test.”

GB play the late game tomorrow with the high-profile clash with Canada facing-off at 8:15pm (7:15pm UK time).
