NIHL North round-up: Stars beat Hawks & Wild to win Cup

Billingham Stars finished their season in style by winning the NIHL Northern Cup with impressive victories at Blackburn Hawks and Widnes Wild.

Hawks went into Saturday’s game with a 100% record in the competition and having won 2-1 in Billingham during March the Moralee D1 champions were strongly fancied to pick up their second trophy this season.

Stars had other ideas as they dominated the hosts throughout on the way to a 6-3 success – Luke Brown (2), Michael Elder(2), Chris Sykes and Dennis Boström got the goals.

Sunday’s trip to promotion-chasing Wild saw Stars produce another assured performance as they secured a 7-1 victory.

Elder (2), Sykes, Brown, Cal Davies, Jack Emerson and Tom Keeley were on the scoresheet against the Laidler D2 team as Stars collected their first silverware since 2012.

Solway Sharks completed their cup fixtures with a 5-1 home win against Wild – Struan Tonnar (2) topped their scoring.
