Paul Thompson says Dan Carlson’s shirt retirement by Coventry Blaze is a fitting reward for his achievements during his time with the club.

The current Sheffield Steelers boss was Carlson’s coach during his six years in Coventry, during which they picked up four Elite League titles, two Challenge Cups, one Knockout Cup and one Elite League Play-Off Championship.

Thompson, who takes his Steelers team to Coventry on Sunday, admitted he was pleased to have the opportunity to see a player that’s been a big part of his own career get his shirt retired.

“He was our go-to guy every night,” said Thompson. “From the first day we signed Dan to the last game, he gave everything. I think it’s fantastic that the club are honouring him this way because it’s more than deserved.”
