Sheffield Steelers‘ boss Paul Thompson has praised captain Jonathan Phillips ahead of his testimonial game at iceSheffield on Tuesday.

Now into his eleventh season with the Steelers, Phillips is the only captain to lift the league title four times and is on course to break Jason’s Hewitt’s record of 682 appearance for the club.

“He’s just a class individual – he’s a class person,” Thompson told Steelers TV. “He gives me everything he has every single night and he’s the glue in that room.

“I said to him to enjoy this week, because it’s actually a celebration of your career and your career for your club because this is his club.

“Sometimes you don’t take it in and I remember someone saying that to me in my testimonial about one hundred years ago, and they said just relax and enjoy it and understand that everyone is here to support you.

“I really do hope he takes it in because he has had a fabulous career, a fabulous career here and he will continue to do that. He is a great captain, leader and person.”
