Canadian Matt Tipoff has agreed to link up with fellow St Mary’s University (SMU) graduate Michael D’Orazio at the Edinburgh Capitals.

The 25-year-old forward has signed a one-year contract with the club and will move to Edinburgh in August after completing his MBA at SMU.

At junior level Tipoff played with current NHL stars Steven Stamkos and P.K.Subban.

He scored 33 goals with 83 assists in 123 games over his five seasons at SMU.

“I consider myself a versatile forward who can play in all situations and be counted on to consistently create scoring chances,” he said.

“I’ve always prided myself on playing the game the right way. A combination of grit and skill have allowed me to be successful throughout junior and the CIS.

“I’m very excited for the opportunity to show the Caps fans what I can do next season.

“After speaking with management and prior signings, it was clear to me that the organization is poised for a turnaround season.

“I jumped on the opportunity to join a great group of guys and am committed to doing anything I can to help the team succeed this year.”

Player/Coach Michal Dobron added: “Matt will be a player who I know will play an important role for us this season.

“He will bring great passing ability, but also knows how to score goals. He will help our special plays too, he’ll be very important on the powerplay and penalty kill.

“He knows some of the players on my team already and I know they all think highly of him.

“I think we are building a really strong core to the team with a good mix of talent and experience.

“I’m looking forward to meeting Matt in person and having him as part of my team.”
