Around the ground –
There are several pubs and restaurants within walking distance of the arena, with the Dewdrop, Star and a Brewers Fayre serving a range of hot and cold food.
Aside from places to eat, the Royal Engineers Museum and Historic Dockyard Chatham provide an afternoon of culture and heritage, while Riverside Country Park and Rochester Castle provide scenic walks in pleasant surroundings.
Getting there –
By car: If travelling from the west, follow the A2 and merge onto the M2. Exit at Junction 4 and turn left at the first roundabout onto Hoath Way/A278. Keep following until you reach a double roundabout, when you will turn left at the first roundabout before turning right onto Ambley Road. Take the second exit at the next roundabout to stay on Ambley Road for 0.2 miles. Follow the brown signs for the ice rink, turning left, right and right again in quick succession. The arena should be 100 yards down the road on the left.
Parking at the rink is available on game-days and costs £1, covering any stay between 3.00pm and midnight on the day of the game. Fans are asked to use the parking machines in the car park, entering the car registration when paying. It is worth noting that parking charges are not managed by the club themselves. Away from the arena, parking is available at the nearby Hempstead Valley Shopping Centre for a maximum six-hour stay.
By train: Both Gillingham and Rainham train stations are located approximately two miles from Planet Ice. Taxis are readily available for transport to the rink, while walking will take approximately 10-15 minutes.
The highest attendance was set during the 2014/15 NIHL Southern Cup Final as a sold-out arena saw Invicta overcome the Chelmsford Chieftains 9-7 on aggregate over a two-legged final.
Local Area –
Based on the River Medway, Gillingham is a town with a population of around 105,000. Twinned with the cities of Ito and Yokosuka in Japan, Gillingham residents celebrate this fact with an annual festival celebrating their maritime heritage.
The diversity and culture Gillingham has to offer is only boosted by the fact that it is home to the Invicta Dynamos ice hockey team who can be found in their ‘barn’ on a Sunday night, firing ‘biscuits’ into their opponents goals.
