Ross Armour scored a hattrick to fire the Nottingham Panthers to a 4-3 shootout win over the Sheffield Steelers, vaulting Danny Stewart’s side to the top of the Elite League standings.
The Motorpoint Arena provided the backdrop for one of the season’s standout contests, with the lead changing hand three times before Brendan Harris netted the shootout winner.
“It’s always a roll of the dice in a shootout, but I liked our compete and how we created chances through the game,” said Panthers head coach Danny Stewart.
“We’ve got to clean up our mistakes, but it was an entertaining game for the fans and they were phenomenal for us tonight.”
Elsewhere, the Dundee Stars played “loosey goosey” hockey en route to victory over the Coventry Blaze, the Fife Flyers fell to their seventeenth consecutive loss, and the Manchester Storm overcame the Cardiff Devils in overtime.

Coventry Blaze 4-5 Dundee Stars

Kevin Moore, Coventry Blaze:
I thought we started off a little bit unfocused and, with that, we didn’t compete as hard as we could. Credit to Dundee, they competed hard all night and executed their gameplan. We didn’t really execute our plan and I think a lot of that was because their effort was better.
It’s one of those things where we’ve been so inconsistent that there’s a dip in play when frustration sets in. We’re trying to bottle up tonight and last night and it just wasn’t there.
We’re in a situation where we need to make sure that we’re the team that’s out there out-competing our opponent. I appreciate that our fans were right behind us until the end, they were pushing us through the end of the third period, but we just didn’t have enough to make them proud.
Marc LeFebvre, Dundee Stars:
I thought it was a gutsy road performance by our guys, it was entertaining for the fans, with lots of goals scored for both teams. At times, it was a little bit too loosey goosey for me, but I’m happy with our guys for the most part.
Obviously, the powerplay is clicking right now and it’s nice for us to get some secondary scoring. It’s a good win against a good team in their building and we’re more than happy.
Fife Flyers 2-5 Glasgow Clan

Jamie Russell, Fife Flyers:
Well, we did a better job in the third period. We’ve been in that situation a few times, we’ve tried to play complicated hockey, and that’s resulted in a really lopsided score. But it was 1-1 in the third period, so we did a much better job in that area.
Mike Sirant, Glasgow Clan:
It was a much better performance tonight. We were anticipating that this would be a tough game against Fife and it was: it was a battle.
We really liked our compete and our intensity, which was lacking yesterday, especially in the second period when our forecheck was relentless.
Overall, I’m very pleased with the result tonight. But, even more importantly, we’re happy with how we played: fast and direct. It was a good game tonight and I’d like to give a mention to Lucas Brine, he was really good.
Manchester Storm 5-4 Cardiff Devils (Overtime)

Nick Welsh, Manchester Storm (Image: Mark Ferriss)
Cam Critchlow, Manchester Storm:
We allowed goals in the first five minutes of each period, but we kept battling back and our special teams were of major importance to this game. We had two huge penalty kills and two powerplay goals by [Nick Welsh].
When you’re not at your best, special teams can really pick you up and I thought [Evan Wenninger] was great in the third period. I’m delighted that we found a way to win that game.
Paul Thompson, Cardiff Devils:
I mean, we were 3-1 up and we took a couple of stupid, undisciplined penalties and we handed the momentum back to them.
They scored on both of those needless powerplays, we then went 4-3 up, and we gave it away again.
Our last couple of weeks haven’t been anywhere near the level I expect from this hockey team: we’re making it too easy to lose games.
Nottingham Panthers 4-3 Sheffield Steelers (Shootout)

Danny Stewart, Nottingham Panthers:
It was a fast-paced game between two really good teams. I liked our first period — and our whole game, really. We made three bad mistakes and they ended up in the back of our net, but it was one heck of a game by that [Bryan] Lemos line. Ross [Armour] scores three and is just unbelievable.
It’s always a roll of the dice in a shootout, but I liked our compete and how we created chances through the game. We’ve got to clean up our mistakes, but it was an entertaining game for the fans and they were phenomenal for us tonight.
Aaron Fox, Sheffield Steelers
We’ll watch the video a little bit more throughout the week, but I thought that was an entertaining game between two teams who competed hard. [Matthew Greenfield] kept us in it in the first period and then we found our game a little bit more in the second.
I thought we closed down the third period very, very well and kept it very perimeter [for Nottingham], but we just got a little bit extended at six-on-five and then the puck ends up in our net.
Anything can happen in a shootout and it was Nottingham who got the extra point tonight.
