All five of Great Britain’s games at the World Championship (Division 1B) tournament in Belfast will be on the BBC.

The games will be broadcast live with radio commentary on either BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra or the BBC Sports website.

GB begin the six-team tournament against Croatia on Sunday, before meeting Estonia, Lithuania, Netherlands and Japan.

Andy French, IHUK general secretary, said: “It is great news that we are linking up with the BBC again.

“They have covered GB for a long time now and it is fantastic they will be able to cover an historic moment in UK ice hockey.”

The BBC line-up is as follows:

Sunday, 23rd April: Croatia v GB (4.00pm) – BBC Sport Online website
Monday, 24th April: GB v Estonia (7.30pm) – BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra

Sorry, not over excited by the news-of course, it’s great that the Beeb is giving any coverage at all to a sport which it has virtually ignored for a long time, but in view of their continuing loss of mainstream sports to Sky or BT they had a heaven sent opportunity to perhaps attract an ever-growing ice hockey audience (if we are to believe the publicity about attendance growth in recent times), and have blown it buy going to sound only coverage. Don’t envy the commentator(s) the task of transmitting the excitement of ice hockey on radio only when you immediately miss out on the visual impact of it on the box.
