Bristol Pitbulls have announced the signing of two-time Elite League winner and Great Britain international Josh Batch.

Batch joins the club following his recent departure from Cardiff Devils, where he spent an impressive 13 seasons.

He made a total of 646 appearances for the Devils, tallying 41 goals and 103 assists. Batch also won an abundance of silverware with the club, namely two league titles, two Challenge Cups and three Playoff Championships.

Earlier this month, Batch confirmed his departure to Cardiff Devils supporters, penning an emotional letter in which he said that the decision to leave the club came with a “heavy heart”.

He added that it was “difficult to put into words” what it meant to represent the club, having debuted for the Devils back in 2011.

“My decision has come over the course of the season, as I’ve reflected on my family’s future and ultimately what would be best for us in the long term,” Batch said.

“As a professional athlete, there has always been a lingering anxiety about life after sport, and I’m at the point now where I feel the opportunity cost of continuing to play is outweighed by the potential opportunities that lie ahead outside of the game.”

Batch will make the move to Planet Ice NIHL National Division side Bristol, who have finished at the foot of the table in each of the last two seasons.

The seasoned defenceman, who is currently out in Romania for Great Britain’s World Championship Division I Group A campaign, becomes the club’s first major signing to be confirmed following the conclusion of the 2023/24 campaign.

Bristol Pitbulls’ Richie Hargreaves said: “We are very fortunate and excited to be bringing a player of Batch’s quality to the Pound for the upcoming campaign.

“It’s hard to ignore Josh’s pedigree and trophy cabinet that would make most hockey players envious.

“As a club, it speaks volumes for the type of player we will be getting. I, and our coaching team, are excited about utilising Josh’s experience and leadership qualities within our organisation.

“We hope an older head at the backend and within our walls will be instrumental to our success on and off the ice this season.”
