Cardiff Devils have announced that Niklas Hovivuori has taken up the role of assistant coach at the club.

Last season, Hovivuori coached alongside new Devils boss Paul Thompson in Denmark’s top division, helping Odense Bulldogs secure their first ever Metal Ligaen Championship.

Prior to coaching in Denmark, Hovivuori spent two seasons in Norway with Comet Halden. Before then, he was part of the setup at Swedish side Lions HC.

He was previously part of the Frolunda Coaching Academy – one of the best-known ice hockey development programmes in Europe.

“Niklas is a calm and educated coach,” Thompson said.

“We had a strong working relationship last season, so that continuity was important for me. I’m very pleased that he is joining me here in Cardiff after our success together in Odense.

“He has a high work ethic and understanding of his role.

“The players will enjoy his support and guidance, [and] Niklas will be a strong asset to our hockey club.”

The appointment of Hovivuori has signalled the end of previous assistant Matthew Myers’ time at the club.

Myers, who enjoyed a trophy-laden 23-year career as a player and featured over 1,100 times in the Elite League, joined the club in a coaching capacity ahead of the start of the 2024/25 season.

The former Great Britain defenceman helped the Devils to a fourth-placed finish in the Elite League last season but will not be returning following the departure of previous head coach Pete Russell, who Myers returned to the club to work under.

“The Devils would like to thank Matthew for his hard work and dedication as part of the coaching staff last season,” a club statement said.

“We wish him the best of luck going forward as he continues his coaching career.”
