Clan add Burt to defensive unit

Braehead Clan have announced the signing of American ‘D’ man Cameron Burt.

The 30-year-old will come to the UK after a spell with DEL2 side Starbulls Rosenheim in Germany, but has played primarily in North America’s ECHL.

Burt said: “I’ve had some great reviews about the club from guys that have played there like Stefan Della Rovere and Scott Pitt, who I played against in college.

“I also talked to Gleason Fournier, who plays for Cardiff Devils, and he spoke highly of the league and pointed out the surprise of how good the hockey is.

“He also spoke positively about the arenas and the good atmospheres they have. I’m a player that feeds off the crowd and I’ve heard a lot of good things about Braehead.

“Talking to coach (John) Tripp and Gareth (Chalmers), everything sounded like what I was looking for in an organisation. I’ve watched videos and the atmosphere sounds great.

Burt was an opponent of Clan coach John Tripp in the DEL2 last season as Starbulls and Tripp’s side Eispiraten Crimmitschau ended up in the scrap for relegation.

Despite working at the wrong end of the table, he picked up 32 points in 52 games in all competitions, scoring eight times.

Prior to that, he had a spell in Sweden with IK Oskarshamn and in the ECHL with Florida Everblades and Ontario Reign.

Tripp admits he was a player that stood out for him in Germany last year and believes he has the right attributes to succeed in the UK.

“Cameron had the misfortune of playing in a team that struggled last season, but there was something about him I liked,” said Tripp.

“Having seen him with my own eyes, I got a few references from other people that know him and they backed up what I already knew so getting him in something I was keen to do.

“Cameron has very good escape speed, can be shifty and can slow the game down. He gets points in whatever league he plays in.

“He has experience in Europe and North America and I believe he’ll fit right into the team I’m building at Braehead.”
