London Raiders’ new signing John Connolly says he was shocked to be shown the door by Chelmsford Chieftains.

The defenseman, along with teammate Matt France, was released and replaced by Billy and Charlie Phillips, with the club five points clear at the top of the league.

Connolly, who has won league titles with both Solway Sharks in NIHL North and the Chieftains in the Southern section, blasted the club’s decision.

“Getting sacked came as a shock really,” said Connolly. “We’d played on Sunday night at Oxford and won 4-3 and I was involved in the winning goal.

“When we got back to Chelmsford I collected my kit and told the coach (Sean Easton) that I’d see him on Tuesday and he replied he’d see me then.

“I was at work yesterday and received a text message from him saying I was sacked – no phone call, just a text.

“I phoned him and got told it was financial as they were signing Billy Phillips, who is friends with the club’s owner. So I was sacked for his mate – job for the boys.

“I was quickly approached by London and we talked at length and came to an agreement I’d go there for the remainder of the season.

“I’m looking forward to the new challenge ahead and hope to use my knowledge and experience to help the team in the league and running into the play-offs.”
